I am led to believe that I should celebrate the turn around in the fight against crime in this beloved country. Only about a thousand murders, fifteen thousand house robberies, eighteen thousand armed robberies in Johannesburg in the last year. When you see these figures in print, it is frightening. fifty armed robberies a day !!! if these are improved figures what were they like before? It doesn't need much more than an idiot to figure out that our police force need help desperately, as do the unemployed who are driven to crime. A child could figure out that the money spent on such things as the purchasing of navy frigates, nuclear submarines, helicopters, attack aircraft, could be used to pay the police force proper wages as a start, or that the endless amounts of taxation on such things as everything we need excluding bread and milk, could be channelled towards education and skills training. Is there a higher transfer duty tax on property anywhere in the world? Could this not offset costs for first time buyers, or build low cost housing? How about the extortionate tax on petrol, cars, toll-roads, registration fees, traffic fines, to be spent on a better public transport system, instead of offering billions to taxi drivers to increase their personal assets. There has to be more to it than presidential jets and the obsession with changing street names and pulling down statues. They will be wanting to sink Robben island next because it is a painful reminder of the past. |
