Toyota South Africa Motors has expanded the GR Corolla range with a new eight-speed automatic (8AT) transmission, engineered for enhanced driveability, cooling performance, and everyday usability. The automatic variant retains the GR Corolla’s turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine and GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system, preserving its sharp handling and performance credentials.
Enhanced Performance and Cooling
The 8AT model features an air-cooled transmission fluid cooler, an additional sub-radiator, and a cool-air duct for improved thermal management. Aerodynamic efficiency is improved through the removal of front fog lamps, and rear privacy glass adds passenger comfort while enhancing the exterior aesthetic.
Torsen limited-slip differentials optimise traction and cornering, while rebound springs and revised rear suspension geometry improve stability under aggressive driving. A higher-capacity cooling fan and tyre pressure monitoring (TPMS) further enhance performance reliability.
Advanced Transmission Technology
The GR Direct Automatic Transmission (GR D-AT) delivers rapid, precise gear shifts and includes:
- Paddle shifters and sequential shift functionality
- Shift-lock system and ATF temperature warning
- Parking Support Brake (PKSB) for vehicle and object detection
Driver-Focused Interior Refinements
The cabin features GR gun metallic accents, relocated iMT switch, upgraded audio system, active noise control, reverse camera, and blind-spot monitoring with Safe Exit Assist. A smart door-lock system with integrated panic function improves security.
Pure GR Performance
The GR Corolla’s turbocharged 1.6-litre engine produces 210kW and 400Nm, with a top speed of 230 km/h. Drivers can choose between a six-speed manual or the new eight-speed automatic. Three driving modes—Eco, Normal, Sport—integrate with GR-tuned suspension and a mechanical handbrake for track and road versatility. A distinctive triple-exit exhaust completes the performance package.
Technology and Safety
The Circuit Edition adds a Head-Up Display, 7-inch infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, and Toyota Safety Sense, including ABS, VSC, EBD, and hill assist. Front and rear limited-slip differentials provide additional control during spirited driving.
